Process

Step 1: Make a list of as many different emotions as you can think of as a group.

Step 2: Each group member should pick 2 emotions from the list to write about and illustrate.

Step 3: Complete your art lessons.

Go to The Artist’s Toolkit. Each group member should pick at least 2 lessons from this website to complete, from different sections. You can complete as many as you have time for. The available sections are:

  • Line
  • Color
  • Space
  • Shape
  • Balance
  • Movement/Rhythm

Go to A Lifetime of Color. Click on and complete the first 3 lessons:
  • Line and Shape
  • Carmine’s Landscape Adventure
  • Color

Step 4: Start your book. Get one piece of paper for each emotion in your book. At the top of the page, start with the words,
“I feel _________ when I …”

Fill in the blank with the emotion for that page. Complete the sentence with a time you feel or have felt that emotion.
Click the button to download the typed page.

Step 5: Illustrate your pages. Make the illustrations cover most of the page. Use at least 2 of the techniques learned from your lessons in your illustrations. You can use crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint. Make sure the words are still visible.

Step 6: Assemble your book. Each group member will complete a different job for the assembly process.

Cover: Write a title on a cover page, write the names of all group members, and draw a simple picture to match. For groups with 4 people, one person can do the writing and one person can draw the picture.

Table of Contents: Write page numbers at the bottom of each finished page, in any order you choose. Write each emotion on the Table of Contents page, with the correct page number next to it.

Assemble: Put all pages in order with the cover on top, Table of Contents next, and other pages in order by page number. Staple the side in 3 places to keep the pages together.

Step 7: Present your book to the class. Choose one group member to introduce your book, telling the book title and names of group members. When the book is turned to a page you completed, read the page, and explain what art techniques you used on that page.

Congratulations! You are now an author and illustrator!
